Tri-County Community Support Services Receives Funding for FASD Case Management Training

Tri-County Community Support Services & FASD Peterborough has been awarded $83,400 over 24 months to support salaries for a program coordinator, trainer and to fund equipment and the training for social service providers to address the issue of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

The funding enables the delivery of Case Management Training, developed and facilitated by FASD Social Work Consultant, Donna Debolt. This training has been delivered by the Child Welfare Institute, Children's Aid Society of Toronto since 2009. A wide range of agencies across Peterborough County responsible for the delivery of early intervention, mental health, addictions, corrections, child welfare, and developmental services have made two year commitments to send staff to this training. There are 30 staff in all.

Local FASD Documentary

James Taylor is a member of the Peterborough FASD Committee. He was born with FASD and advocates for increased education about FASD and appropriate supports for those affected by the disorder. In 2008, James worked with the Peterborough chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association to make a video about FASD. Some funding of the project was provided by FASD Peterborough. The video brings to light the challenges and successes that James has experienced living with FASD. Facts about FASD and a message of prevention are weaved throughout this documentary. James accompanies members of the FASD Committee to make presentations of his video in the community.

"To live a safe and partially effective life, many affected individuals will be functionally dependent on having the assistance of an "external brain" to remind them what needs to be done, and when things need to be done. The correct approach when working with a person who is functionally dependent is to provide them with almost constant external organization."
